Commentary

Durham's November 5 agenda includes appointments connected with participatory budgeting and environmental advice. Such seats receive less attention than votes on large construction projects.

Our view for Durham

We believe committee membership is part of public accountability. An appointment determines which residents, expertise and lived experiences can influence future recommendations. Selection criteria ought to be easily found, and meeting records ought to be written for people who cannot attend in person. That applies whether the nominee is popular or controversial.

What we want to see next

We ask the city to maintain public applications, term dates, conflict disclosures and concise explanations of appointments.

For the underlying facts, consult the original public record or reporting. For more coverage, visit Bull City Citizen, our Opinion section and read our continuing North Carolina election coverage.
