West Trinity Avenue is slated for a lengthy closure while restoration work continues. The city has published detour information, and the environmental purpose of the project deserves a fair hearing.
Our view for Durham
Yet a detour map is rarely a complete answer for the merchant whose customers suddenly take another route. We believe long-duration construction notices should include clear pedestrian access, delivery options, business signage and an easy way to report harm. Infrastructure improvement and local commerce need not be treated as opposing goals.
What we want to see next
City agencies should publish construction-access plans alongside schedules and update them when conditions change. That would make a necessary disruption more manageable.
