Commentary | Bull City Citizen Editorial Desk
Durham's Keep It Durham-Owned initiative gives local owners a chance to investigate employee succession. It tackles a problem that gets less attention than ribbon cuttings: what becomes of a good business when its founder retires.
Our view for Durham
We believe the city is right to explore continuity as an economic-development objective. Employee ownership is not a universal solution, and government should not pressure a family into an unsuitable transaction. But confidential advice, transparent financial analysis and genuine worker choice can keep wealth and decision-making closer to home.
What we want to see next
The program should report how many owners seek advice and whether transitions actually occur, while protecting confidential company information.
