A late night trip to an automated teller machine ended in violence early Sunday morning in the small town of Aulander, where a person was fatally shot while attempting to complete a transaction.
The Bertie County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the homicide occurred around 12:30 a.m. at the Valero gas station located at the corner of West Main Street and Commerce Street. The victim was shot at the ATM on the property. Authorities have not released the victim’s name pending notification of next of kin.
Investigators have not yet disclosed whether the shooting appears to be a robbery, a targeted act or a random encounter.
