Commentary

Durham's November 5 council agenda includes proposed ratification of several festival and cultural-event contracts totaling $65,000. The list covers different kinds of community gatherings and arts programming.

Our view for Durham

We value the cultural life of Durham, and we recognize that small events may produce benefits not captured by ticket sales. Still, public funds should come with clear goals and accessible follow-up. Organizers should have room to describe cultural value, neighborhood participation and what support made possible without completing an expensive consultant's report.
