Commentary
Recent Durham business reporting includes changes to planned restaurant openings and continuing debate over the use of downtown space. Individual opening announcements do not tell the full story of the district's commercial health.
Our view for Durham
We would judge downtown policy by the survival and variety of businesses, not only the number of new signs over doors. The everyday necessities matter: predictable access, places for independent retailers, workable lease terms and clean shared spaces. A short-lived opening can create excitement without becoming lasting economic strength.
What we want to see next
We hope public and private downtown partners publish consistent vacancy, lease and foot-traffic indicators with their methodologies attached.
