Downtown Durham Inc. says more than 20 businesses opened since late May, a promising sign of entrepreneurial energy. New restaurants, retailers and services help keep downtown interesting.

Our view for Durham

An opening count is not a balance sheet of neighborhood health. We would like to see more consistent public measures of closures, vacant space and the survival of locally owned shops after their first year. Durham can cheer a grand opening without ignoring rent pressure or the need for ordinary, affordable businesses that serve residents every week.

What we want to see next

Downtown partners should publish clear year-over-year context alongside opening announcements and continue promoting the businesses already invested here.
