DURHAM, NC – A Durham police officer has been recognized for his heroic actions following a triple shooting in the McDougald Terrace neighborhood in November 2024.
According to the Durham Police Department (DPD), the shooting occurred on November 6, 2024, near A&T Mini Mart at the intersection of Ridgeway Avenue. Three individuals were shot, and several nearby businesses were damaged by gunfire.
Officer W. Ma’s Life-Saving Response
Upon arriving at the scene, Officer W. Ma discovered one of the victims suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. Recognizing the urgency, he immediately administered first aid, applying pressure to the wound until EMS personnel arrived.
“Officer Ma used his training and quick decision-making to stabilize the victim, providing critical care in those first few moments,” the department stated.
The victim was transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment. Two other shooting victims were also treated for life-threatening injuries.
Officer Recognized for Going Above and Beyond
Last week, Officer Ma, a member of Durham’s District 4 Patrol Division, was officially commended for his bravery and service.
“Officer Ma’s swift response exemplifies what it means to serve with compassion,” the Durham Police Department said in a statement.

The McDougald Terrace neighborhood, one of Durham’s historically underserved areas, has seen an uptick in gun-related violence in recent years. Local residents continue to express concerns about safety, calling for stronger crime prevention measures and more visible law enforcement presence in the area.
