RALEIGH, NC (WNCN) – The far-reaching impact sports have had on American culture cannot be understated.
The same can be said on the financial side, as sports franchises across the country bring in nearly $40 billion a year, from ticket and merchandise sales, media rights and sponsorships. But one question often comes to mind – what are the best cities in the US for sports lovers?
Personal finance company WalletHub sought to answer that question, releasing its report on the best sports cities in 2024 to help fans get the most for their money while enjoying their favorite sports.
In their study, the researchers compared 400 cities across 50 key metrics related to the five major sports in the country: football, baseball, soccer, football and hockey.
Each city was classified based on population size from large cities (over 300,000 people), medium-sized cities (100,000 to 300,000 people) and small cities (less than 100,000 people). Finally, where do North Carolina cities fall on this list?
Among major cities, Charlotte appeared first in the No. 1 spot.
The city of Raleigh also came in at No. 9 in the top cities for hockey fans.
Sitting in the Triangle, the city of Durham, home to the Durham Bulls and Duke Blue Devils, earned the honor of 8th place for mid-sized sports cities. Other North Carolina cities that appeared on this particular list include Winston-Salem (No. 26), High Point (No. 76), Cary (No.
The town of Buies Creek, where Campbell University is located, earned a spot on the list of small sports towns, coming in at No. 10. Other notable inclusions among Triangle cities include the likes of Chapel Hill (No. 36), home of the North Carolina Tar Heels, and Zebulon (No. 172).
