DURHAM, NC—Social media played a crucial role in linking multiple suspects to a fatal shooting in Durham last year, according to newly released police documents. Investigators used Instagram videos to connect two men to the July 20, 2023, killing of a man near a bus stop on North Miami Boulevard.
The Shooting and Initial Investigation
At approximately 3:30 p.m. on July 20, 2023, Durham police responded to reports of gunfire in the 2400 block of North Miami Boulevard. Upon arrival, officers found a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The victim, later identified as Morris, succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
A 911 caller reported seeing a silver SUV leaving the area following the shooting. Police later reviewed surveillance footage, which captured a gray SUV driving past the crime scene. The footage showed a man firing a handgun from the front passenger window. That individual was later identified as Jaquzi Henderson. The vehicle, a Kia Sorento, had been reported stolen earlier that morning.
Investigators also determined that a second shooter was in the rear passenger seat, extending their arm out the window and firing a handgun.
Social Media Evidence
Key evidence in the case came from Instagram videos reviewed by detectives. Warrants indicate that between 3:35 p.m. and 4:45 p.m. on the day of the murder, several videos were uploaded, showing Henderson and two other individuals—identified in police documents as “JR” and “RF”—inside the stolen SUV.
In one live-streamed video, Henderson is seen in the driver’s seat while JR and RF are in the front and back passenger seats. The video allegedly shows JR and RF handling and exchanging a handgun, making gestures that imitate firing a weapon.
Another video reportedly captures Henderson in the driver’s seat with a firearm resting on his lap. RF is seen making gang-related hand signs, including one associated with the “Eight Tray Gangster Crips.” Police documents state that RF also made gestures mimicking the act of shooting someone, further implicating the group in the homicide.
Law enforcement officials note that social media platforms, particularly Instagram, are increasingly being used by gang members and criminal groups to communicate, recruit, and display illegal activities.
Vehicle Pursuit and Firearm Discovery
At approximately 6:40 p.m. the same day, a Durham police officer spotted the stolen Kia Sorento and attempted a traffic stop. However, the vehicle refused to pull over, leading to a pursuit. Shortly afterward, Orange County authorities received a 911 call from a driver reporting that a rifle had been thrown from a moving SUV along I-85 South.
Officers searched the area and recovered a discarded firearm in the grass near the reported location. Investigators later confirmed that the weapon matched the one seen in the Instagram videos.
Police also recovered the abandoned Kia Sorento, which contained spent shell casings. Forensic analysis linked those casings to shell casings found at the crime scene, further connecting the suspects to the fatal shooting.
Arrests and Charges
In December 2024, Jaquzi Henderson was formally charged with:
• Murder
• Conspiracy to commit murder
• Possession of a stolen vehicle
Henderson remains in custody without bond. Authorities have not yet disclosed whether additional suspects, including JR and RF, will face charges.
The Role of Social Media in Crime Investigations
This case highlights how social media platforms like Instagram can serve as both a tool for criminals and a resource for law enforcement. While gang members and offenders often use these platforms to showcase illegal activities, investigators are increasingly leveraging digital evidence to solve crimes.
Durham officials emphasize that surveillance footage, forensic evidence, and social media activity are all critical components of modern police investigations.
