The City of Durham is preparing for a significant resurfacing project aimed at enhancing mobility and connectivity for all road users. The initiative, funded by the City’s Financial Development Program, will focus on IW Main Street, stretching from Ninth Street to N Buchanan Boulevard. Set to begin in November 2023, the project promises to improve conditions for pedestrians, cyclists, transit users, and drivers by modifying paint markings on the existing road surface.
Project Scope and Limitations
This resurfacing effort will upgrade road markings to include additional bike lanes and crosswalks, but it will not involve structural enhancements like new sidewalks. Since Main Street is a state road, any proposed changes must adhere to North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) standards, which may limit the scope of possible improvements.

Community Engagement and Planning
The Durham Department of Transportation has completed a traffic analysis and developed initial design plans, holding a consultation meeting and a Highway event to engage with the public. As part of the community outreach, City staff will host an open event in early spring 2024 to discuss proposed pavement marking changes. These gatherings will provide opportunities for residents to ask questions and share feedback, which has already been incorporated into the final design plans.
Interactive maps and cross-sectional designs are available for public viewing, although it should be noted that NCDOT has yet to approve the draft designs. Community members are encouraged to explore the Remix Interactive Map and offer suggestions before February 4, 2024.
