DURHAM, NC (WNCN) – The CHIPS and Science Act continues to enter the Research Triangle Park, with $70 million in funding from the Department of Commerce awarded to two MACOM centers, one in Lowell, Mass. and Morrisville, NC
According to their press release, the US Department of Commerce has signed an initial agreement to provide up to $70 million in direct financing to MACOM Technology Solutions, a semiconductor supplier located in Morrisville.
The funding comes from the CHIPS and Science Act, a federal bill under the Biden Administration that has issued many incentives to the research and production of semiconductors in the US, which has already provided $285 million for the possible launch of the SMART USA Institute in RTP. .
According to a press release, this $70 million investment will expand operational facilities and create up to 350 jobs and 60 construction jobs in North Carolina and Massachusetts.
“Today’s announcement shows how the CHIPS and Science Act allows the United States to develop cutting-edge technologies while protecting our national security and bringing economic opportunity to communities across the country,” said National Economic Adviser Lael Brainard.
MACOM produces chips that help develop military defense systems, including airborne and ground-based radar systems, as well as commercial applications such as telecommunications. According to the press release, MACOM will also be able to improve company-wide training, career development and tuition reimbursement by partnering with colleges in the area.
