Tragedy on South Roxboro Street: Impaired Driver Causes Fatal Collision

Durham, NC – Just days before Christmas, a fatal crash on South Roxboro Street claimed the life of a 67-year-old woman and left a community reeling. The Durham Police Department (DPD) has confirmed that the collision, which occurred shortly before 7 p.m. on Saturday, involved an impaired driver traveling the wrong way.

According to initial reports from DPD, Nathane Blackmon, 42, was driving a GMC Yukon northbound on North Roxboro Street when he veered across all lanes of traffic. He then continued southbound in the wrong direction on South Roxboro Street, colliding head-on with a vehicle driven by Dawn Tucker. Tucker, the victim, was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to her injuries.

A passenger traveling with Tucker sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment. Police have not released updates on their condition. Another motorist, whose vehicle was also struck by Blackmon during the incident, was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Blackmon, who was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, faces charges of driving while impaired (DWI), driving left of center, and failure to wear a seatbelt. Additional charges may be filed as the investigation continues, police said.

Community Concerns and Broader Implications

This incident has reignited conversations about road safety and the ongoing impact of impaired driving in Durham and surrounding areas. According to the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT), impaired driving remains a leading cause of traffic fatalities in the state. In 2023 alone, there were over 400 alcohol-related crashes in Durham County, accounting for nearly 30% of all reported traffic accidents.

Local residents and community leaders are calling for stricter measures to prevent impaired driving, such as increased police checkpoints, public education campaigns, and expanded access to rideshare services during peak hours. “This is an avoidable tragedy,” said one resident who lives near the crash site. “We need to prioritize safety for everyone on our roads, especially during the holidays when these incidents seem to spike.”

Legal Ramifications

As the investigation unfolds, Blackmon could face additional charges, including vehicular manslaughter. North Carolina law stipulates that a DWI charge involving a fatality carries significant penalties, including potential prison time and the permanent revocation of driving privileges.

The DPD has urged anyone with additional information about the crash to contact CrimeStoppers. Tips can be submitted anonymously, and rewards may be available for information leading to a resolution.
