Durham Crews Tackle Winter Weather: City Prepares Roads for Safety

Durham, NC – With winter weather threatening the Bull City, Durham’s Public Works Department is taking proactive steps to ensure road safety for residents. Crews are hard at work, loading trucks with salt and sand, and preparing plows to combat the potential impact of snow and ice on streets and bridges.

Public Works Director Marvin Williams assured residents that the city is ready for whatever winter may bring. “We’ve got several thousand tons of salt and sand ready to go,” Williams told The Bull City Citizen. “As we get closer to real snow, we will adjust our management based on whether it’s a combination of real snow, rain, or freezing rain.”

Durham’s Winter Defense Plan

The city has deployed 14 trucks equipped with plows and spreaders, prioritizing major roads and bridges that pose the greatest risk during icy conditions. Crews are closely monitoring weather forecasts to determine where their efforts will be needed most.

Key elements of the city’s response include:

Flexible Strategies: Depending on precipitation levels, crews may shift focus from main roads to neighborhoods and sidewalks.

Resource Tracking: Residents can view the city’s snow plowing routes in real-time via an online map available on the city’s website.

Rapid Deployment: Crews stand ready to respond as conditions evolve throughout the night.

Williams noted that while the city has ample resources to manage the weather, the hope is that only a portion of the stockpile will be necessary. “We’re prepared to act, but we’ll conserve materials if conditions allow,” he explained.

What Residents Should Know

As snow and ice threaten the area, Durham officials urge residents to exercise caution:

• Avoid unnecessary travel during the storm.

• Check the city’s snow plowing route map for updates.

• Drive slowly and carefully, especially on bridges and untreated roads.
