Durham County Sheriff Clarence Birkhead isn’t mincing words when it comes to federal immigration enforcement in his community. Speaking at a recent event, Birkhead compared ICE’s presence to “roaches… everywhere,” while reminding residents that they have rights and do not have to live in fear.
What Birkhead Said
“ICE is in Durham, ICE is everywhere, and they are multiplying,” Birkhead told the crowd. “But here’s what you need to know. You don’t have to engage with an ICE officer any differently than you would a Durham Police Officer or a Durham County Sheriff’s Deputy.”
He outlined the rules clearly:
During a traffic stop, you must provide your license and registration. You are not required to answer questions about immigration status. You do not have to let ICE officers into your home unless they show a valid warrant. You do not have to go with them voluntarily.
“Plain and simple,” Birkhead said.
On Tactics and Mask-Wearing
Birkhead criticized ICE’s approach, calling their use of masks “cowardice.” He emphasized that no Durham County deputies wear masks while on duty, framing it as a matter of transparency and trust.
“They’re using intimidating tactics,” he said. “But you’ll never see a Durham County Deputy hiding behind a mask.”
Durham’s Policy
Since his election in 2018, Birkhead said Durham County has not participated in ICE raids. He stressed that while Durham is not a sanctuary city, it is a welcoming community.
“Here’s the difference,” he explained. “We don’t harbor criminals—foreign or domestic. But are we a sanctuary for those seeking a better life? Yes. For those who want to love who they want to love? Yes. That’s who we are.”
Nationally, immigration enforcement policies often blur the line between local policing and federal action. Birkhead insisted Durham’s approach is clear: violent criminals will not find protection, but ordinary families deserve dignity and security.
Why It Matters
For Durham residents—especially those in immigrant communities—Birkhead’s words serve as both a warning and reassurance. ICE activity can feel overwhelming, but residents have rights.
