Family Remembers Emmanuel Gbedee Sr. as a Man of Strength and Devotion Following Tragic Death

Durham, NC — The family of Emmanuel Gbedee Sr., a devoted husband, father, and community member, is grieving his loss after he was tragically killed while working as an Uber driver on the evening of January 11. Authorities in Johnston County have charged 18-year-old Tray’vian Brown with murder in connection to the case.

A Life of Dedication

Gbedee Sr., 57, was described by his eldest son, Emmanuel Gbedee Jr., as a man of strength, dignity, and unwavering values. Known for his selflessness, he was always ready to assist others, from giving rides to attending last-minute events for family or friends.

“Dad was the kind of person who would drop everything to make sure you had what you needed,” said Gbedee Jr. His younger son, Eneye Gbedee, echoed this sentiment, recalling his father’s kindness and willingness to help.

That Saturday evening, Gbedee Sr. had accompanied his youngest daughter to a birthday party. With free time on his hands, he decided to complete a few Uber rides, as he often did to support his family. However, his life was cut short after picking up Brown from the Benson neighborhood on Holly Grove Road. Investigators found Gbedee Sr. deceased in his car not far from the pickup location early Sunday morning.

Suspect Charged in Tragic Killing

Johnston County authorities have charged Brown with murder, and he remains in custody at the Johnston County Jail without bond. While the arrest provides some relief to the grieving family, they are still grappling with the senseless loss of their loved one.

“It’s a little bit of relief… knowing that someone has been caught for doing something so senseless,” said Gbedee Jr. However, the family continues to struggle with the deep emotional toll of the tragedy.

A Family Left Behind

Gbedee Sr. leaves behind his wife of 29 years and four children. He and his wife were high school sweethearts and were just weeks away from celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary.

“It hurts to know that we were planning a celebration for both of them,” Gbedee Jr. shared, reflecting on the pain of losing his father so suddenly.

Gbedee Sr. was highly educated, with multiple degrees and a career in finance, and was known for his dedication to providing for his family. His children expressed both admiration for their father’s legacy and determination to honor it.

“I will try to fill those big shoes that he left before me,” Gbedee Jr. said, acknowledging the challenges ahead.

Seeking Justice and Healing

As the Gbedee family moves forward, they are calling for accountability and reflection from the suspect. “I pray for the restoration of the mind and heart, an honest expression of the pain caused,” said Eneye Gbedee, emphasizing the depth of the loss.

A Community’s Loss

This tragedy is a stark reminder of the risks faced by rideshare drivers and the senseless violence that continues to affect families across the region. Local community members have expressed support for the Gbedee family, with many calling for enhanced safety measures for drivers and increased awareness around violence prevention.

Support for the Family

In memory of Emmanuel Gbedee Sr., friends and loved ones have started organizing efforts to support his grieving family. More information about how the community can assist will be shared in the coming days.
