The City of Durham’s Department of Transportation is leading the Reimagine Durham Freeway study. This study aims to develop a community-led vision for the Durham Freeway corridor (also known as NC 147) through central Durham.
The study began in January 2024 and is expected to last until the summer of 2025. From April to June 2024, the project team conducted our first phase of public engagement for this research. Thanks to everyone who participated to help shape the vision for the future of the Durham Freeway! During the spring consultation, we collected 790 surveys that will be used to develop highway options that will address the needs and desires of the community. A summary of the current state of the technology analysis and the first phase of public consultation can now be found in the library, which is available. here.
The top themes we heard from the community during the events and survey included:
- The main concern about the impact of the Durham Freeway is safety and limited travel options.
- Community improvements you would like to see include better pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure, community development and investment opportunities, and removal of the freeway as it is today.
- Visions for the future of the Durham Freeway include words like “Community”, “Safe”, and “Better”
“Continued emphasis on car transport in Durham at the expense of public transport, walking, cycling and full accessibility for those who do not have the privilege of being able to drive and/or own a car.”

Contact the research team at an in-person public meeting at the WD Hill Recreation Center at 1308 Fayetteville Street, Durham, on Tuesday, November 19 from 4pm – 7pm to review potential strategies, speak directly with team members, ask questions, and provide feedback to determine on the future of the Durham Freeway.
