DURHAM, NC – The Durham Police Department is investigating the suspicious death of an elderly woman found Saturday afternoon in the 1100 block of Da Vinci Street.

Emergency responders were dispatched to the residence around 2:30 p.m. for a welfare check. Upon arrival, members of the Durham public safety team discovered the woman’s body in the backyard, according to a statement released by police.

The incident remains under investigation. Police have not released the woman’s identity or the circumstances surrounding her death.

“This incident is an ongoing investigation,” officials said, urging the public to come forward with any information that could assist detectives.

The welfare check was conducted by one of Durham’s HEART (Holistic Emergency Alternative Response Team) units. Launched in 2022, HEART teams are designed to provide alternative responses to non-violent mental health or quality-of-life emergencies. They aim to connect residents with appropriate care rather than defaulting to traditional law enforcement measures.

The HEART initiative reflects Durham’s innovative approach to addressing community needs, emphasizing proactive care and intervention for vulnerable populations.
