Durham, NC – An early morning fire near Duke University’s East Campus left one person injured and a pet cat unaccounted for, according to the Durham Fire Department. Fire crews responded to the blaze around 3:40 a.m. Wednesday at a two-story house located at the corner of North Buchanan Boulevard and Monmouth Avenue.
Firefighters Respond to Reports of Trapped Occupants
During a press briefing, Battalion Chief R. Ray of the Durham Fire Department stated that crews arrived to find a large fire with reports of individuals trapped inside. Firefighters acted swiftly, entering the home to search for occupants and extinguish the flames.
One person was found inside and was quickly rescued. The individual received on-site treatment from Durham County EMS before being transported to a nearby hospital for further evaluation. Their current condition has not been disclosed.
Cat Missing in Aftermath of Fire
Although the fire was brought under control, firefighters were unable to locate a pet cat reportedly still inside the home. Efforts to locate the animal are ongoing, though officials acknowledged that its fate remains uncertain.
