A suspect has been taken into custody following an active shooter alert issued at North Carolina Central University (NCCU) during the school’s “Ultimate Homecoming Experience” on Saturday night.
According to university officials, gunfire erupted at approximately 7:38 p.m. in the parking lot of the Debra Saunders-White Residence Hall on Fayetteville Street, prompting the university to issue an active shooter alert at 7:43 p.m. The alert was lifted after 8:10 p.m., but shortly before that, a second report of gunshots was made around 8:59 p.m. at the NC Central administration building.
While initial reports indicated that four individuals were shot, officials clarified that there were no injuries resulting from the gunfire. The circumstances surrounding the shots, including whether any firearms were discharged, have not been detailed.
The NCCU daily crime and fire log recorded the gunshots, and law enforcement, including NCCU Police and the Durham Police Department, are currently investigating the incidents.
The homecoming events continued until 10:30 p.m., despite the earlier gunfire, following a football game against Morgan State that started at 3:30 p.m.
University officials stated that more information would be released as it becomes available. For the latest updates and news on this developing story, stay connected with Bull City Citizen.
