Durham Man Arrested for Alleged Attempt to Support ISIS

DURHAM, NC—Federal officials have revealed new details surrounding the arrest of a Durham man accused of attempting to support and join the terrorist organization ISIS. During a press conference on Thursday, the FBI confirmed that a seven-month investigation culminated in the December 2024 arrest of 29-year-old Alexander Justin White as he attempted to board a flight at Raleigh-Durham International Airport. Authorities believe White, who also used the alias “Sulaiman Al-Amriki” online, acted alone.

Investigation Overview

The investigation into White’s activities began in early 2024, focusing on his alleged online support for ISIS and efforts to join the group. A 30-page criminal complaint details White’s purported social media activity, which included posts advocating for ISIS and seeking connections to join the organization. The complaint also outlines his travel plans, including a December 5 flight itinerary to Paris and onward to Morocco.

FBI Special Agent Robert DeWitt stated, “Mr. White was literally stopped in his tracks,” emphasizing the swift action taken to prevent him from leaving the country.

Details of the Charges

According to U.S. Attorney Mike Easley, White is accused of attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization. Easley noted that White allegedly expressed willingness to engage in violence, including against U.S. citizens and military personnel.

“When White was asked if he was okay with killing members of the military or U.S. citizens, the complaint says he responded that even if it were a family member, he would still fight them,” Easley stated.

Authorities allege that White sought to become a mujahadeen, a term describing someone who engages in violent jihad. Evidence presented in the complaint includes White’s online interactions, his stated intentions, and alleged financial support for ISIS-related activities.

International Collaboration

The U.S. investigation received critical support from Moroccan authorities. Easley acknowledged the contributions of Morocco’s General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance, which assisted in uncovering key elements of the case. “We are cooperating with Moroccan authorities as we build our case,” Easley said.

Community Awareness and Prevention

White’s arrest serves as a stark reminder of the importance of community vigilance in identifying signs of radicalization. “You may be the first person to see someone involved in violence—whether it’s your son, your brother, your friend, or your neighbor,” Easley urged. “If you see someone slipping into dangerous ideas or engaging in violence, speak up now.”

The U.S. government encourages citizens to report suspicious activities through established channels, including the FBI’s tip line and local law enforcement.

Potential Penalty

If convicted, White faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. He remains in custody as the legal proceedings continue.

Community Reaction

Attempts to contact White’s family at his last known address in Durham were unsuccessful, and neighbors declined to comment. While the case has shocked some residents, others emphasize the importance of maintaining community safety through proactive measures.
