DURHAM, N.C. — The North Carolina Central University (NCCU) men’s basketball team is set to take on Longwood University in a much-anticipated rematch on Friday, Dec. 20, at McDougald-McLendon Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
This marks the second meeting between the two squads in just one week. The Eagles (6-8) earned a hard-fought 77-70 victory over the Lancers (10-3) on Dec. 14 in Farmville, Va., breaking a series tie and giving NCCU a slight edge at 4-3.
Eagles Riding Momentum
The Eagles are coming off a commanding 112-67 win over Mid-Atlantic Christian University on Tuesday, showcasing their offensive and defensive prowess. Senior guard Keishon Porter led the way, recording his first career double-double with 25 points and 10 rebounds.
The team’s defense has been particularly impressive. Against the Mustangs, NCCU didn’t allow a single three-pointer (0-8), and the Eagles currently rank 25th in the nation in three-point percentage defense, holding opponents to just 28.2%.
Additionally, the Eagles excel in creating turnovers, ranking third nationally in turnovers forced per game (18.14), 11th in steals per game (10.4), and 13th in turnover margin (+5.7). Porter ranks 27th in the country in steals (26), while redshirt senior guard Isaac Parson is 62nd in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.71).
Longwood Looking for Revenge
The Lancers, who suffered their third loss of the season to NCCU, rebounded with a decisive 77-55 victory over Campbell University on Dec. 18. Johan Nziemi led Longwood with 13 points, and Elijah Tucker added seven rebounds.
Michael Christmas, Longwood’s leading scorer this season, averages 11.8 points per game. Colby Garland also stands out, ranking in the top 100 nationally in total assists with 52.
Longwood’s defense remains a cornerstone of their success, holding opponents to 66.6 points per game, second in the Big South Conference. Nationally, the Lancers excel in several categories, including:
• 7th in free throws made per game (19.5)
• 12th in turnovers forced per game (16.77)
• 12th in free throw attempts per game (26.2)
• 20th in bench points per game (33.62)
Key Storylines to Watch
1. Defensive Duel: Both teams rank among the national leaders in forcing turnovers. NCCU’s ability to disrupt Longwood’s offense could be a deciding factor.
2. Keishon Porter’s Impact: After his stellar performance on Tuesday, Porter will look to continue leading the Eagles on both ends of the court.
3. Bench Contributions: With Longwood ranking 20th in the nation in bench points, NCCU’s depth will be tested in what promises to be a physical contest.
