Labor Commissioner Luke Farley Reinstates Photo on Elevator Inspection Certificates

In a move emphasizing transparency and accountability, North Carolina Labor Commissioner Luke Farley has reinstated the practice of featuring the commissioner’s photograph on elevator inspection certificates. This initiative aims to assure the public of the North Carolina Department of Labor’s (NCDOL) commitment to safety and quality in elevator operations.

Historical Context

The tradition of displaying the labor commissioner’s photo on elevator certificates began in 2005 under then-Commissioner Cherie Berry. Her image became a familiar sight to elevator passengers statewide, earning her the affectionate nickname “Elevator Queen.” This practice was discontinued in recent years but has now been revived by Commissioner Farley.

Commissioner Farley’s Statement

Commissioner Farley announced the reinstatement via social media, stating, “As promised, the elevator picture is back — and so is accountability. When you see my photo, name, and signature on an inspection certificate, you know I stand behind the work of @NCDOL.”

The reintroduction of the commissioner’s photo has been met with positive feedback from both the public and industry professionals. Many view it as a personal assurance of the NCDOL’s dedication to maintaining high safety standards in elevator inspections.
