DURHAM, NC — In a groundbreaking move, the Durham Fire Department has embraced modern technology to revolutionize training for its firefighters. Using the video game simulator Into The Flames, the department has stepped into the future, allowing firefighters to prepare for emergencies from the comfort and safety of their station.
From simulating burning buildings to practicing radio communication, the video game offers a comprehensive and immersive training experience. Deputy Chief Jim Cole reflected on how far training methods have come since he began his career.
“We didn’t have video games or VR,” said Cole. “We would have to put trucks on the scene, pull the hose, and light fires or put fake smoke out of the building.”
Realistic Scenarios Without Real-Life Risks
The simulator, customized specifically for the Durham Fire Department, enables firefighters to train for almost any emergency scenario. It supports up to 20 players at a time, fostering teamwork and coordination.
Captain Jakob Cook highlighted the benefits of this innovative tool.
“It makes a lot more sense for computer training than we’ve had access to in the past,” Cook explained. “Because we’re able to work with engineers, we’re able to develop those simulations of what we’re trying to get out of.”
The game allows users to practice tasks ranging from pulling hoses and extinguishing flames to driving incident command vehicles to the scene, creating a realistic yet risk-free environment.
“It’s a comprehensive plan so that we can put out the fire from start to finish, and no one gets hurt, no one has to sweat and get dirty or anything,” added Cole.
A Vision for the Future
While Into The Flames is available for public use, the Durham Fire Department collaborated with the game’s developers to tailor the experience for their unique needs. Officials are already looking ahead, working with engineers to make the simulator even more advanced and versatile.
This innovative approach is more than just a training tool; it signals a shift in how fire departments can leverage technology to enhance safety, efficiency, and preparedness.
As Durham continues to lead in adopting cutting-edge solutions, its firefighters are better equipped than ever to protect and serve their community.
