DURHAM, NC (WNCN) – Newly released 911 calls are shedding light on the aftermath of a four-year-old’s shooting by his mother in Durham.
The incident took place two Saturdays ago at the houses on Cornwallis Road, and emotions are still running high as Vintasia Sowell, 24, is surprised by the charges.
The 911 calls released to CBS 17 came from the mother herself shortly after the shooting. They are extremely emotional and very disruptive.
“It’s my baby’s shot,” Sowell said on the phone. “I caught him on my way to Duke. My child has been shot. My child has been shot.”
Sowell now faces charges of child abuse and assault with a deadly weapon causing serious injury. According to the police, the little girl is in critical condition.
The 911 calls came in while Sowell was driving her daughter to Duke Hospital, and a third passenger in the back could be heard.
“I’m sorry,” Sowell said. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I’m sorry. Put pressure on it. Put pressure on it.”
Some callers said they heard gunshots in the house and heard people arguing at the scene. One thing the calls don’t reveal is exactly what led to the shooting.
Warrants state that Sowell “caused a shot to be fired, which resulted in [her daughter] the blow on the left side damaged the spleen, liver, kidneys and stomach.” The warrants also state that Sowell used a .223 handgun and that the incident was caused by “other means of accident”.
The young victim’s aunt also called 911.
“I was standing outside my car,” he said. “I heard one shot, I heard one shot. My sister ran out of the house and said she had been shot. She got into the car holding my nephew by the hand. She got into the car and took him away.”
Last week, Sowell appeared briefly in court after posting a $50,000 bond. CBS 17 tried to ask him how this all happened. He declined CBS 17’s request for comment and cursed before leaving the courtroom.
We reached out to the mother again on Wednesday, but we did not hear back.
