Durham’s Better Bus Project Aims to Enhance Transit Services and Accessibility

DURHAM, NC – The Better Bus Project, a multi-phase initiative by GoDurham, is currently in its design stage, with the goal of improving public transit accessibility, safety, and service throughout the city. Spanning five individual projects, the initiative is set to bring transformative changes to key bus routes and infrastructure, benefiting thousands of daily riders.

Breaking Down the Better Bus Project

The project is divided into three main sections: Planning, Design, and Construction.

Section 1: Planning

The planning phase, already underway, includes a comprehensive analysis of GoDurham’s transit needs and focuses on key areas such as:

Bus Access Project: Identifying and enhancing pathways to bus stops to ensure safe pedestrian access.

Bus Speed and Reliability: Optimizing routes and schedules to improve punctuality and travel times.

Durham Station Transit Improvements: Upgrading facilities to better serve riders.

Corridor Enhancements: Improvements along Fayetteville Street, Holloway Street, and the Village Transit Center to streamline routes and access.

Horton Road Pedestrian Improvement Project: Addressing pedestrian safety and accessibility around bus stops.

Section 2: Design

The project is now in its design phase, where detailed plans for street, sidewalk, and bus stop upgrades are being developed. This phase will continue throughout 2025, focusing on ensuring the improvements meet the needs of the community.

Section 3: Construction

The construction phase will begin following the completion of the design phase. Specific timelines and updates will be released once designs are finalized.

Key Focus Areas: Routes 3 and 5

GoDurham Routes 3 and 5 are receiving special attention within the project. These routes serve some of Durham’s most densely populated and high-traffic areas, making their enhancement a priority for improving overall transit efficiency and rider experience.

Community Involvement and Survey Insights

Community input has played a crucial role in shaping the Better Bus Project. A recent survey conducted during the planning phase highlighted key rider concerns and priorities:

• Improved safety and accessibility at bus stops.

• Reduced wait times and more reliable schedules.

• Enhanced amenities, such as better seating and weather protection at stops.

Why the Better Bus Project Matters

Public transit is a lifeline for many Durham residents, and the Better Bus Project represents a commitment to creating a safer, more efficient, and more convenient system. By addressing long-standing challenges, such as accessibility and service reliability, the project aims to not only improve the rider experience but also promote sustainability by encouraging more people to use public transportation.
