Teen’s Death Sparks Community Mourning and Call for Justice in Durham

DURHAM, NC — On Thursday evening, hundreds of family members, friends, and community members gathered at Magnolia Pointe Apartments to release balloons in memory of 15-year-old Aryion Clendenning, affectionately known as “AJ.” The teenager’s life was tragically cut short on Saturday in a shooting that has left his loved ones grieving and seeking answers.

The balloon release, a solemn yet poignant tribute, symbolized the impact AJ had on those around him. The diverse crowd in attendance reflected the community’s collective grief and solidarity in the wake of this devastating loss.

A Promising Life Remembered

AJ was a student at Riverside High School, where he was known for his love of soccer and video games. His mother, Taniesha Baines, described him as a kind-hearted and well-loved young man.

“I know the type of child my son is, so I knew there would be many people [here],” Baines said. “He’s not that street kid. That’s not him. Everyone loved him.”

Nathan Baines, AJ’s uncle, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing AJ’s positive impact. “It shows the impact he had here doing something right,” he remarked.

On the morning of the incident, Baines recounted how she had encouraged AJ to play in the snow—a moment that would tragically become her last with her son. Hours later, her family’s life was forever changed.

The Crime and Investigation

According to Durham police, AJ was shot and killed by the driver of a stolen white Hyundai Sonata, identified by its license plate number, PHB5033. The vehicle’s occupants remain at large and are considered armed and dangerous. Police urge anyone with information to call 911 immediately.

The circumstances surrounding the crime have left the community reeling, with many calling for swift justice. AJ’s family has also made impassioned pleas for individuals with knowledge of the incident to come forward.

“If you know something, say something,” urged Baines. “I need justice for my son.” Nathan Baines added, “It’s going to cost you in the end because he was innocent, and he was just 15. If you don’t say anything, you’re just as guilty as the person who did it.”

A Community in Mourning

The tragedy of AJ’s death highlights broader concerns about youth violence and stolen lives in Durham. The city has seen a troubling rise in incidents involving stolen vehicles and firearms. Local law enforcement and community organizations continue to emphasize the importance of collaboration between residents and authorities to address these issues.

Community Efforts to Combat Violence

In the wake of AJ’s death, local activists and organizations have renewed their calls for stronger youth engagement initiatives, community policing, and better resources for at-risk teens. Groups such as the Durham Committee on the Affairs of Black People and local churches are stepping up to provide support for families affected by violence and to foster dialogue about solutions.

Justice for AJ

For AJ’s family, the path forward is one of grief, resilience, and hope for justice. “We’re holding onto faith,” said a family friend. “AJ’s life mattered, and we won’t stop until the truth comes out.”
