The City of Durham’s Department of Transportation is leading the Reimagine Durham Freeway study, aimed at developing a community-driven vision for the Durham Freeway (NC 147) through the heart of Durham. This initiative began in January 2024 and is expected to continue until summer 2025.
From April to June 2024, the project team conducted the first phase of public engagement, collecting valuable feedback from community members. Thank you to everyone who participated in shaping the future vision for the Durham Freeway! During this period, 790 surveys were gathered to inform options for the highway that address community needs and desires. Summarized documents of the technical analysis of existing conditions and results from the first phase of public participation are available in the document library linked below.
Key Themes from Community Feedback:
•Concerns: Major issues include safety and limited mobility options on the Durham Freeway.
•Desired Improvements: The community seeks enhanced infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists, community development and investment opportunities, and the potential reimagining or removal of the current highway structure.
•Future Visions: Responses from the survey reflect a desire for a “community,” “safe,” and “big” highway.
As the study progresses, the project team is working diligently to develop concepts based on public input and technical analyses. Public meetings will be held in November to present these ideas and gather additional feedback. Specific dates and details will be announced in October.
How to Get Involved:
•Phase 2 of Public Participation: The second phase is now underway, with a manual of potential strategies for the corridor developed based on feedback from Phase 1 available for community review. You can download the Phase 2 brochure for possible strategies and study updates.
•Online Survey: Share your thoughts on the proposed strategies through our online survey at bit.ly/ptc2024survey. The survey will remain open until December 13.
