Durham, NC — Durham voters have approved two bonds in the 2024 election, allocating $200 million to enhance parks and road safety across the city. The funding will address longstanding concerns from residents about pedestrian safety and recreational spaces.
One notable project includes constructing a sidewalk along East Club Boulevard, an area frequented by pedestrians but lacking safe walking spaces. Jeffrey Dudley, a local resident, expressed support for the change, saying a sidewalk would make the heavily trafficked area safer for all.
Durham City Council member Carl Rist acknowledged the need for upgrades, stating, “We have a great road network and trail network, but it’s not good. It has stains.” Rist emphasized that filling in these gaps will improve safety and access throughout Durham.
The approved bonds will also support major park developments, including a new aquatic center at Merrick-Moore Park and an upgraded pool with new amenities at Long Meadow and East End parks. Durham Parks and Recreation Director Wade Walcutt shared his enthusiasm, noting, “For us, excitement is making a resident’s dream come true.”
Transportation Director Sean Egan highlighted that these projects respond to community feedback over the past decade. “Members of our community have been telling us…that they really need these sidewalks here. Now, we’re going to be able to bring those trails in and start working on building the rest of our road network,” Egan stated.
Funding for these initiatives will result in a 3.46 cent tax rate increase beginning in 2026, adding about $104 annually to the tax bill on a $300,000 property. Mayor Leonardo Williams praised Durham’s strong showing in this election, saying, “Durham was very visible… What was important to us was to take care of the home.”
Officials confirm that project implementation will begin immediately.
