Durham Residents and Students React to First Snowfall of the Season

DURHAM, NC – Snow blanketed the Bull City this weekend, sparking a mix of excitement and frustration among residents as slippery roads and winter weather disrupted daily routines. For some, it was a rare and unwelcome sight, while others embraced the snow as an opportunity for fun and relaxation.

Mixed Reactions from Residents

Tyrrell Speight, a Durham resident, didn’t mince words when asked about driving in snowy conditions. “I don’t like it at all, especially here in North Carolina because people can’t drive,” Speight said, voicing a sentiment shared by many who braved the slick roads.

For Jordan Jones, the snow presented a challenge she wasn’t prepared for. “It was really bad. I almost wrecked my car because it’s my first time driving in the snow,” she explained.

Others opted to stay off the roads entirely. “The grocery run is off my to-do list,” Jones added. “The roads are very slippery, so I’m just making do with what I have at home.”

Students Make the Most of It

While driving in snow proved stressful for some, a group of UNC-Chapel Hill students welcomed the weather as a chance to take a break from their busy schedules.

“It was fireworks,” one student said, describing the joy of seeing snow fall with friends. “I love experiencing this with my friends—it’s a unique part of growing up in North Carolina.”

With classes canceled for the day, many students looked forward to a carefree weekend. “Maybe I’ll sleep,” another student joked. “I’m ready to take the whole weekend off.”

Snow Safety and Caution

As the snow continues to coat the region, local officials are reminding residents to exercise caution on the roads. Slippery conditions can be especially hazardous for those unfamiliar with winter driving. The City of Durham has dispatched crews to treat major roads and bridges with salt and sand, but side streets and residential areas remain a concern.
