Durham Rescue Mission Mobilizes to Aid Homeless Amid Freezing Temperatures

As temperatures in Durham plummet to 25 degrees Fahrenheit, the Durham Rescue Mission has intensified its outreach efforts to assist the homeless population enduring the severe cold. On Tuesday, two dedicated teams traversed the city, distributing essential items such as gloves, socks, food, and hot beverages to those in need. Their mission: to offer immediate relief and encourage individuals to seek shelter at their facilities.

Ron Scarborough of the Durham Rescue Mission emphasized the urgency of their initiative, stating, “In this week of cold weather, what a blessing to invite people.” The teams successfully engaged with approximately 20 individuals, providing them with necessary supplies. Despite their efforts, some individuals opted to remain outdoors. Scarborough expressed concern, saying, “Some people prefer to stay out like this and I have a problem with that. Come in. We just want to help. But we can’t make people.”

The Durham Rescue Mission, established in 1974, is the city’s oldest and largest long-term homeless shelter. It offers a comprehensive range of services, including safe shelter, three daily meals, clean clothing, biblical counseling, financial planning, vocational training, GED/education programs, and employment assistance. Their facilities can accommodate approximately 267 individuals, with the capacity to expand to 312 beds during emergencies.

During periods of extreme weather, the organization activates “Operation Warm Shelter,” a program designed to provide safe haven during severe cold spells. Staff members canvass the streets, offering coffee and donuts to the homeless, informing them of the dangerous weather conditions, and providing free transportation to the mission’s shelters. A white flag is flown at the facility to signal the availability of shelter during such times.

The mission’s outreach is not limited to Durham; efforts extend to neighboring areas, including Raleigh, to ensure that as many individuals as possible receive assistance during harsh weather conditions. The organization relies entirely on donations and volunteer efforts from individuals, churches, businesses, civic groups, foundations, and other organizations, as it does not receive local, state, or federal government funding.

Community members are encouraged to contribute to the Durham Rescue Mission’s endeavors. Donations of warm clothing, non-perishable food items, and financial contributions are particularly valuable during the winter months. Volunteer opportunities are also available for those willing to assist in various capacities.
