A tireless advocate for justice, education, and the advancement of the African American community, Dr. Allison leaves behind a legacy that will forever shape the fabric of Durham and beyond.
Born in Durham during the era of segregation, Dr. Allison attended Hillside High School in the 1940s, where she was taught to defy racial stereotypes and pursue excellence. Her belief that one’s character and capabilities transcend skin color became a guiding principle throughout her life. She furthered her education at Hampton Institute, where she joined Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., solidifying her lifelong commitment to service and leadership.
Her journey as a leader accelerated in 1968 when Dr. Allison, encouraged by her husband, Ferdinand Vincent “Pete” Allison, became the first woman to serve as First Vice Chair of the Durham County Democratic Party. Her trailblazing spirit continued as she chaired the Durham Committee on the Affairs of Black People (DCABP) for 14 years. Under her leadership, the DCABP became a powerhouse of advocacy, playing a pivotal role in vetting political candidates and advancing the rights of Black residents in Durham.
Throughout her career, Dr. Allison received widespread recognition for her unwavering dedication to civil rights and education. In August 2023, Durham Mayor Elaine O’Neal presented Dr. Allison with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the DCABP’s 88th Annual Founders’ Day Banquet, celebrating her decades of transformative leadership.
