In a troubling case that has shocked the community, Bull City Citizen reports that a Durham man, Lloyd Young Son Kim III, was arrested Monday for allegedly exploiting an elderly woman he was entrusted to assist. The arrest came two weeks after the Durham Police Department issued a warrant for Kim, 36, who is accused of a series of fraudulent and exploitative actions.
Court records outline a distressing series of events: Kim, whom the elderly woman relied upon to drive her to the bank, church, and various shops, is alleged to have accessed her bank account via her computer, transferring $73,000 to himself. In a further betrayal of trust, Kim reportedly stole the woman’s 2019 Subaru Impreza, valued at $10,000, and used her identity to present a forged $500 check to a public employee’s credit union.
The alleged crimes spanned from August 21 to September 26, according to the warrant, and Kim now faces a string of charges, including:
• Exploiting the trust of an elder
• Obtaining property under false pretenses
• Improper computer access
• Vehicle theft
• Identity theft
• Forgery
Kim has been issued a $100,000 secured bond and is expected to appear in court on Thursday.
