DURHAM, NC – Following Tuesday night’s snowfall, Durham Public Works crews have been working diligently to treat the city’s primary and secondary roads. While efforts are underway, some streets remain covered in snow, leaving drivers to navigate challenging conditions until temperatures rise and natural melting occurs.
Durham resident Sierra Barton expressed concerns over road conditions during the Wednesday morning commute.
“I haven’t seen a lot of salt or plows, but I feel like the sun has made the roads a lot better,” Barton said. “Some areas are still rough and snowy, so everyone should drive slowly and stay cautious.”
City’s Response and Road Treatment Efforts
Durham Public Works deployed 12 trucks to distribute salt on key thoroughfares across the city. According to Public Works Director Phillip Powell, the city’s approach to snow management is influenced by the relatively low accumulation levels seen this week.
“We’re plowing very little,” Powell explained. “With an inch to half an inch of snow, there’s not enough depth to effectively use plows. If we had a few more inches, we’d be able to clear the roads more effectively.”
Public Works prioritizes treatment efforts on major roads first, including heavily trafficked routes such as Duke Street and Roxboro Road. Secondary streets, such as University Drive and Chapel Hill Street, are treated as needed based on conditions.
“This is not a one-day effort,” Powell stated. “We anticipate continuing treatment through Wednesday and possibly into Thursday.”
Road Safety and Precautions for Drivers
As crews continue their efforts, Durham Public Works urges residents to take precautions and limit unnecessary travel. Officials advise motorists to slow down, maintain safe following distances, and, when possible, keep vehicles off the road to allow crews to work efficiently.
“You have to invest in salt and things that will prepare you because this will not be confusing,” Barton added, emphasizing the need for proactive winter preparedness.

Looking Ahead
Durham’s winter weather response strategy aligns with regional trends, where cities in the Triangle area prioritize major roads and public safety over full residential street clearance. According to the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT), the state’s winter weather resources are allocated based on forecast severity and population density, with a focus on keeping key transit corridors operational.
In the meantime, residents are advised to exercise patience and caution while public works teams continue their efforts to mitigate icy conditions.
