Duke Gardens Embarks on Transformative ‘Garden Gateway’ Project

Enhancing Visitor Experience with New Facilities and Green Spaces

Sarah P. Duke Gardens, a cherished 55-acre botanical haven in the heart of Duke University, has initiated the ambitious ‘Garden Gateway’ project—a $30 million renovation and expansion aimed at enriching the visitor experience and accommodating the gardens’ significant growth over the past decade. Construction commenced on February 3, 2025, with an anticipated completion in spring 2026.

The Garden Gateway project is set to introduce a host of new features, including:

• New Welcome Center: A state-of-the-art facility featuring a dedicated visitor lobby, café, gallery space, upgraded restroom amenities, and an outdoor gathering plaza.

• Enhanced Learning and Event Facilities: Expanded classrooms and meeting spaces to support educational programs, community events, and university functions.

• Improved Accessibility: A safer and more accessible entrance, complete with a special drop-off location for school buses, ensuring a welcoming environment for all visitors.

• Expanded Green Spaces: New lawns and outdoor areas designed for events, performances, and leisurely enjoyment.

These developments aim to elevate Duke Gardens as a vibrant hub for students, the university community, and the public, while preserving the character that has made it one of the region’s most beloved destinations.

During the construction period, the main entrance at 420 Anderson Street and the gardens’ parking lots will be closed. Visitors can access the gardens through a temporary pedestrian entrance at 2000 Lewis Street and via garden gates leading to West Campus along Flowers Drive. Notably, there will be no on-site visitor parking during weekdays; however, public parking is available on weekends in the nearby Duke University H-lot, located at Anderson Street and Yearby Avenue. Visitors are encouraged to check the Duke Gardens website for the latest information and plan their visits accordingly.

The project is funded by private contributions, including lead gifts from The Duke Endowment, underscoring a shared commitment to enhancing this community treasure. As construction progresses, limited programs and events will continue, with schedules available on the Duke Gardens website. Most public tours and school programs will pause until the renovations are complete, but wayfinding resources will be available on-site to guide visitors.
