Duke University Hospital Restores Full Emergency Services After Holiday Flooding

DURHAM, NC – After an unexpected flood on December 26 caused by a burst 12-inch cooling water pipe, Duke University Hospital has announced the full reopening of its emergency department, welcoming all Emergency Medical Service (EMS) vehicles as of Tuesday.

In a statement released by Duke Health officials, they confirmed, “Duke University Hospital has officially lifted Emergency Department protocol and is actively accepting all EMS traffic.” This marks a critical step in restoring normal operations after the flooding incident disrupted emergency services.

The incident occurred at approximately 11:40 a.m. on December 26, when a cooling water pipe burst inside a wall, flooding key areas of the hospital, including the emergency department. As a result, ambulances were redirected to neighboring hospitals, while patients arriving independently were treated in alternative areas of the facility.

The hospital’s rapid response teams and partner organizations worked tirelessly to minimize the impact on patient care. “We extend our hearts to the emergency medical services and neighboring hospitals that have provided support over the past few days as our teams work to reactivate the Department of Emergency Situations after the Dec. 26 floods,” Duke officials expressed in their statement.

The reopening of Duke University Hospital’s emergency department highlights the resilience and collaboration of Durham’s healthcare community. Nearby facilities like UNC Health and WakeMed played pivotal roles in accommodating redirected ambulances, underscoring the strength of local partnerships during crises.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of infrastructure resiliency in healthcare systems. While the flooding caused temporary disruptions, Duke University Hospital’s quick recovery reaffirms its commitment to providing world-class care.

For residents of Durham and the surrounding areas, the restoration of services at Duke University Hospital offers renewed peace of mind. Emergencies can now be addressed at one of the region’s leading hospitals, ensuring patients receive the care they need without delay.

As a central figure in the Triangle’s medical community, Duke University Hospital continues to demonstrate its ability to adapt and overcome challenges, strengthening its bond with the people it serves.
