Duke Health Implements Visitor Restrictions Amid Surge in Respiratory Illnesses

DURHAM, NC – Duke Health has announced temporary visitor restrictions across all its hospitals and surgical centers following a significant increase in respiratory infections throughout the Triangle region. According to a news release on Friday, the new measures aim to curb the spread of influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and COVID-19 within healthcare facilities.

Effective Monday, January 6, Duke University Health System facilities will enforce the following guidelines:

Daytime Visitors: Patients are limited to two adult visitors aged 12 and older.

Overnight Visitors: Visitors must be at least 18 years old, unless they are the parent or guardian of a child patient.

Additional Protocols: Children under 12 are prohibited from visiting hospital wards unless granted prior approval for special circumstances.

Duke Health officials emphasized that these measures are part of a broader strategy to safeguard patients, visitors, and healthcare workers during a period marked by high levels of respiratory illnesses.

“Preventing the spread of influenza, RSV, and COVID-19 within our healthcare system is our top priority,” the news release stated.

Enhanced Guidelines and Recommendations

Visitors are also being asked to adhere to several precautionary measures during their time in Duke Health facilities:

Masking: Masks are required for all visitors to minimize potential exposure.

Hand Hygiene: Handwashing stations and hand sanitizers are available in all facilities, and visitors are strongly encouraged to use them frequently.

Symptom Monitoring: Anyone experiencing fever, cough, or flu-like symptoms is urged to stay home to prevent exposing patients or staff to illness.

Duke Health has assured the community that these restrictions are temporary and will be reevaluated as the number of respiratory illnesses declines.

A Regional Trend

The Triangle area, including Durham, Raleigh, and Chapel Hill, has reported a marked increase in respiratory infections in recent weeks. According to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS), flu and RSV cases have surged statewide, putting pressure on hospitals and medical staff.

Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) further highlight a nationwide trend, with respiratory viruses peaking earlier this season compared to previous years. In North Carolina alone, flu-related hospitalizations have more than doubled compared to this time last year.

Local pediatrician Dr. Angela Carter explained the potential reasons behind the spike: “This season has seen a convergence of factors, including lower natural immunity in the population due to reduced virus exposure during pandemic lockdowns, coupled with a highly transmissible flu strain.”

Community Impact

These restrictions have sparked mixed reactions from the community. While many residents support the protective measures, others express concern about limited access to loved ones during critical medical events.

Durham resident Lisa Franklin shared her thoughts with The Bull City Citizen: “While it’s tough to not see family members in the hospital, I understand the need to protect vulnerable patients. It’s about balancing safety and emotional support.”

Healthcare workers have also expressed relief at the stricter measures, citing the need to reduce virus transmission during a period of increased patient load.
