City of Durham Celebrates Digitization Week to Promote Digital Equity

The Durham City Council has officially proclaimed October 7–11, 2024, as Digitization Week, recognizing the city’s commitment to improving digital access and fostering technology equity. The announcement was made during the City Council meeting on October 7, 2024, with Councilor Nate Baker presenting the proclamation to Chief Data Officer Frederick Ravin, Acting Digital Inclusion & Community Engagement Manager Patrice Carroll, and Marcella Engmann, Board Member of the Digital Durham Collaborative.

Digitization Week emphasizes the city’s efforts to bridge the digital divide by expanding access to broadband Internet, enhancing digital literacy, and providing technology support. These initiatives aim to empower residents to achieve their health, educational, and economic goals through improved digital inclusion.

The weeklong event highlights Durham’s dedication to ensuring all residents have access to technology resources and training. Programs include free computer basics classes offered by the Kramden Institute and Student U, where participants receive eight hours of instruction and a laptop upon completion. Although the classes are fully booked, residents are encouraged to explore future opportunities via the Kramden Institute’s website.

October 8: Spanish-language Computer Basics Class at Student U (class full)
