Durham Police Crack Down on Speeding During Thanksgiving Holiday

Durham, NC – In a concerted effort to promote road safety during the busy Thanksgiving travel period, the Durham Police Department and the Durham County Sheriff’s Office launched a traffic enforcement operation last week. The operation, conducted on Tuesday, November 26, resulted in over 100 traffic stops and multiple violations, according to officials.

The campaign targeted speeding and reckless driving as more than 2 million people traversed North Carolina’s highways for the holiday season. Officers from the Durham Police Department’s Traffic Accident Crash Team (TACT) and Motor Units joined forces with at least 12 vehicles from the Durham County Sheriff’s Office for the operation.

In total, authorities issued 94 speeding tickets and 22 additional citations for various driving infractions, including three charges for reckless driving. The most egregious violation reported was a driver clocked at 95 mph in a 60 mph zone.

Durham Police released video footage showcasing the operation, including the use of undercover vehicles and marked motorcycles. Officers monitored traffic from strategic positions along highways, ensuring maximum visibility and efficiency in their enforcement efforts.

“As we enter the holiday season, the Traffic Services Unit of the Durham Police Department reminds drivers to respect the speed limit, fasten their seat belts, avoid distracted driving, and never drive while impaired,” officials emphasized in a Friday statement.

The initiative reflects the department’s commitment to reducing traffic accidents and fatalities, particularly during periods of increased travel. With holiday traffic expected to continue into the New Year, Durham Police urge residents to prioritize safety and compliance with traffic laws.
