Crash Closes Three Lanes of I-85 in Durham for Over an Hour

Durham, NC – A crash on Interstate 85 southbound temporarily closed three lanes Saturday night, causing delays but no reported major traffic backups. The incident, which occurred near mile marker 117, just past the NC 55/Avondale Drive exit and the Roxboro Street N exit, was first reported around 8:30 p.m., according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT).

Incident Details

Images and video footage from NCDOT show a vehicle that crashed into the guardrail on the right side of the southbound lanes. Debris from the collision scattered across three lanes, prompting authorities to block off the affected area while cleanup efforts were underway.

Durham Police responded to the scene and managed traffic flow while the lanes remained closed. At least one ambulance was spotted at the site, though details about injuries remain unclear. The Bull City Citizen has reached out to the Durham Police Department for updates on the crash, including the condition of those involved.

A tow truck arrived at approximately 9:05 p.m. to remove the wrecked vehicle, and crews worked quickly to clear debris from the roadway. All three lanes reopened shortly before 9:30 p.m., restoring traffic flow to the area.

Traffic Impacts

While there were delays due to the lane closures, there were no reports of significant traffic backups. NCDOT emphasized that quick action by first responders and cleanup crews helped minimize the disruption.
