Bull City’s Beloved Wheels Skating Rink Rolls Back into Action

DURHAM, N.C. — In a jubilant celebration of community and nostalgia, the historic Wheels Durham Roller Skating Rink has reopened its doors after a comprehensive renovation, marking a new chapter for a venue that has been a cornerstone of East Durham’s cultural landscape for over four decades.

Originally established as Wheels Fun Park, the facility closed in 2020 after 40 years of operation, leaving a void in the community. The City of Durham purchased the property in 2021, initially planning to repurpose it into an aquatic center. However, strong community advocacy led to a revised plan that preserved the roller rink while integrating new amenities.

The renovation project, managed by Central Builders, Inc. of Mebane, focused on modernizing the facility to meet current safety codes and ADA accessibility standards. Key upgrades include improved lighting, sound systems, and structural enhancements to ensure a safe and inclusive environment for all patrons.

A significant highlight of the reopening is the vibrant public art installation by local artist Dare Coulter. Commissioned by the city, Coulter’s work features colorful, sculptural representations of community members, capturing the spirit and history of Wheels. The artwork serves as a visual testament to the rink’s enduring impact on Durham’s cultural fabric.

The rink’s operations are now managed by United Skates of America, Inc., a national chain known for revitalizing roller skating venues. With a focus on community engagement, the company has introduced a range of programs, including themed skate nights, educational field trips, and family-oriented events.

The grand reopening on February 27, 2025, was met with enthusiasm, drawing crowds of former patrons and new visitors alike. The event featured a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by city officials, live music, and, of course, plenty of skating. Tickets for the inaugural skate session sold out quickly, underscoring the community’s excitement for the rink’s return.

As Durham continues to evolve, the revitalization of Wheels stands as a testament to the power of community advocacy and the importance of preserving cultural landmarks. The rink not only offers a space for recreation but also serves as a symbol of the city’s commitment to honoring its past while embracing the future.
