Amazon Partners with Farmer Foodshare to Combat Food Insecurity in the Triangle

Durham, NC – In a season often marked by abundance, food insecurity remains a pressing issue for many in North Carolina, particularly in Durham and the surrounding Triangle area. To address this need, employees from Amazon’s Same-Day Delivery Fulfillment Center in Durham recently volunteered to pack and deliver fresh food to local families in need.

In collaboration with the Durham-based nonprofit Farmer Foodshare, Amazon delivered more than 350 boxes of fresh, locally sourced produce to over 1,200 individuals across Durham, Orange, and Wake counties on Monday. The effort was accompanied by a $10,000 donation from Amazon to support Farmer Foodshare’s ongoing mission of connecting local farmers with those experiencing food insecurity.

A Community-Centered Partnership

Farmer Foodshare, founded in 2009, is dedicated to tackling the dual challenges of food insecurity and the economic struggles faced by local farmers. The organization sources fresh fruits and vegetables from nearby farms, ensuring nutritious food reaches those who need it most.

“Fresh fruits and vegetables are not always available to hungry people,” said Hillary Bruce, spokesperson for Farmer Foodshare. “We’re working to change that and make sure people have access to—not just food—but nutritious food that will help sustain them through the holiday season.”

The Triangle’s Hunger Problem: A Closer Look

Hunger remains a persistent issue in North Carolina. According to Feeding America, one in seven North Carolinians faces food insecurity, a sobering statistic that includes 448,460 children statewide. The issue is especially pronounced during the holidays, when financial strain and increased demand for basic goods can deepen the crisis.

Organizations like Farmer Foodshare and corporate partners like Amazon are critical in addressing this gap. By providing fresh, healthy options instead of non-perishable items, these initiatives prioritize both quantity and quality of food for families in need.

The Role of Amazon in Local Communities

Amazon, one of the largest employers in the Triangle, has made headlines not only for its logistical innovations but also for its community involvement. The company’s Durham-based Same-Day Delivery Fulfillment Center, which processes approximately 50,000 packages daily, has increasingly focused on giving back to the community it serves.

This holiday season, Amazon employees stepped up to pack and deliver the food boxes, highlighting the company’s commitment to volunteerism. Their efforts are a reminder that large corporations can play a meaningful role in addressing local challenges.

More Than a Drop in the Bucket

While the partnership between Amazon and Farmer Foodshare is impactful, experts note that systemic change is required to address the root causes of food insecurity. Efforts like these, however, can provide immediate relief and bring awareness to a pervasive issue.
