New Skating Rink ‘Wheels Durham’ Set to Open at Merrick-Moore Park in Early 2025

Durham, NC – Residents of Durham will soon have a new recreational space to enjoy as the Durham Parks and Recreation Department nears completion of its highly anticipated skating rink project, Wheels Durham, located at Merrick-Moore Park.

The multi-use skating rink is currently in the final stages of preparation, with the city awaiting the issuance of a Certificate of Occupancy from the Department of City Planning. Once approved, United Skates of America, a national operator of skating facilities, will step in to complete the installation process, a task expected to take approximately four weeks. The grand opening is projected for early 2025.

A New Hub for Recreation and Community

The Wheels Durham project is part of the city’s broader efforts to expand accessible recreational spaces and foster active lifestyles among residents. Merrick-Moore Park, a key public green space in Durham, was chosen as the location to cater to both nearby neighborhoods and the broader community.

Durham Parks and Recreation (DPR) Director Sharon Williams emphasized the city’s vision for the new facility:

Wheels Durham represents our commitment to providing diverse, high-quality recreational opportunities for residents of all ages. Whether it’s skating for fitness, fun, or community gatherings, this facility will be a significant addition to Durham’s public park system.”

Skating in Durham: Meeting Growing Demand

Skating facilities have been in demand across the Triangle, particularly as interest in roller skating and inline skating continues to surge nationwide. The rise in skating’s popularity reflects its appeal as an inclusive and affordable recreational activity suitable for individuals, families, and organized groups.

Durham’s latest addition addresses a gap in skating venues within the city, offering both recreational opportunities and a space for community events. By partnering with United Skates of America, the city ensures professional oversight and amenities that align with national standards for skating facilities.

What’s Next?

Once the Certificate of Occupancy is issued, United Skates of America will handle the finishing touches, including rink equipment installation, safety inspections, and program setup. While the city has not announced an exact opening date, residents can expect the ribbon-cutting ceremony and public launch sometime in early 2025.
