DURHAM, NC (WNCN) — Emotions are running high as a Durham mother faces charges in the shooting death of her four-year-old child.
On Saturday afternoon, a shot went off in the Cornwallis Road apartment where a four-year-old girl was shot. The child’s mother, Vintasia Sowell, 24, was arrested after the incident. He is charged with child abuse and assault with a deadly weapon causing serious injury.
When the police arrived at the scene, they said the four-year-old victim was already in a nearby hospital after being rushed there in a private car.
Warrants state that Sowell “caused a gunshot to be fired, resulting in [her daughter] the blow on the left side damaged the spleen, liver, kidneys and stomach.” The warrants also state that Sowell used a .223 handgun and that the incident was caused by “other means of accident”.
On Monday, Sowell appeared briefly in court after posting a $50,000 bond. CBS 17 tried to ask him how this all happened. He declined CBS 17’s request for comment and cursed before leaving the courtroom.
Sowell has appointed a public defender and is now scheduled to appear in court next on February 17.
The girl has been in critical condition since Monday, according to police.
Police said anyone with information about the shooting should contact Inv. M. Judy at 919-560-4440, ext. 29252. People can also provide information anonymously to Durham Crime Stoppers through the website or by calling 919-683-1200. Information leading to a criminal arrest is eligible for a $2,000 cash reward.
