Durham, NC – A 42-year-old driver has been arrested following a three-vehicle crash on North Roxboro Street Friday night that left one woman dead and two others injured, according to the Durham Police Department (DPD).
The accident occurred shortly after 7:00 p.m. in the 5000 block of N. Roxboro Street. Investigators say Nathane Blackmon, driving a 2011 GMC Yukon, crossed all lanes of traffic while heading northbound and entered the southbound lanes. Blackmon’s vehicle struck a 2009 Honda Accord driven by 67-year-old Dawn Tucker, as well as a 2000 Chevy Silverado traveling southbound.
Victim and Injuries
Dawn Tucker, a Durham resident, was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries. A passenger in her vehicle sustained serious injuries but is expected to recover, police said. The driver of the Chevy Silverado suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene.
Blackmon was also transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Charges Filed
Following the investigation, Blackmon was charged with driving while impaired (DWI), driving left of center, and failure to wear a seatbelt. The DPD noted in a news release that additional charges could be forthcoming as the investigation remains ongoing.
Police Request for Information
Detective JT Rose is leading the investigation, and the DPD is urging anyone with information about the crash to come forward. Witnesses or those with relevant details are asked to call Detective Rose at (919) 560-4935, extension 29409.
Community Response
This incident has reignited concerns over impaired driving and road safety in Durham, particularly during the holiday season. According to the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT), impaired driving accounted for nearly 30% of all traffic fatalities in the state last year. Local organizations are calling for stronger preventative measures, including increased checkpoints and community outreach campaigns to raise awareness about the consequences of driving under the influence.
