Airlines have added multiple nonstop routes to tropical destinations—including the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and the Bahamas—marking a pivotal moment in the airport’s expanding international footprint.
Setting the Stage: Avelo’s Tropical Expansion
Avelo Airlines, a low-cost carrier based in Houston, continues to broaden its Triangle reach. This February, it launched nonstop seasonal service from RDU to Montego Bay, Jamaica, and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. The route to Punta Cana begins on December 6, 2025.
Following that, in June, Avelo will reintroduce twice-weekly flights to the Bahamas, filling a gap left when Bahamasair ended service last year.
