Wheels Durham Roller Skating Rink Set to Reopen After Extensive Renovations

Durham, NC – After years of anticipation and community effort, the Wheels Roller Skating Rink at Merrick-Moore Park is set to reopen on February 27, 2025. The grand opening will feature a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 6 p.m., followed by an open skate session. Tickets for the skating session are available exclusively through online pre-sale, starting February 20.

A Community-Driven Revival

Originally established as part of Wheels Fun Park, which operated for nearly four decades before closing in 2020, the roller skating rink was a cherished recreational spot for many Durham residents. Recognizing its significance, the City of Durham purchased the property in 2022 and initiated plans to renovate and reopen the rink. This decision was heavily influenced by community advocacy, emphasizing the rink’s cultural and historical importance.

Overcoming Delays

The renovation project faced several challenges, including weather-related setbacks and supply chain disruptions, which pushed the original reopening date from fall 2024 to early 2025. Despite these hurdles, the commitment to preserving this iconic venue remained steadfast.

Artistic Enhancements

A highlight of the renovated facility is a site-specific exterior public art installation by award-winning artist Dare Coulter. The artwork celebrates the rink’s legacy and its significance to the Durham community. Coulter’s design process involved extensive community engagement, including skate parties and surveys, ensuring the art reflects the vibrant spirit of local skaters.
