DURHAM, NC – The family of Arturo Velazquez Chavez is grieving the loss of their loved one, who was fatally shot while working at a Durham food truck on January 24, 2025.

A memorial of flowers, candles, and handwritten messages now sits at Mexican JV American, the food truck where Chavez was killed on NC Highway 55.

Remembering Arturo Velazquez Chavez

Chavez was working alone, preparing orders, when the shooting occurred. His sister, Laura Velazquez, spoke about his dedication to his work and the heartbreaking circumstances of his death.

“Unfortunately, someone else decided to take his life,” Laura said. “He was just doing what he loved.”

Chavez’s brother, Julio, who owns the food truck, described his late sibling as a hardworking man who poured his heart and soul into helping the family business thrive.

“He was working seven days a week. My heart is broken because my brother was literally working when this happened,” Julio said.

Community Support and Fundraising Efforts

The family has launched a fundraiser to help cover Chavez’s funeral expenses. In addition, they are hosting a community event with various food trucks on February [date] from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 2601 NC Highway 55, where all proceeds will go toward covering funeral costs.

Chavez was known for his kindness and generosity, with friends and fellow food truck owners recalling his willingness to help others in the industry, even on his days off.

“Sometimes he’d be out buying food from other food trucks, and if he saw they were overwhelmed, he’d jump in and help them cook,” said family friend Dioz. “Who does that? He was one of a kind.”

Arrest Made in Shooting

Durham police arrested 32-year-old Jeisson Munoz-Valencia in connection with Chavez’s murder. Munoz-Valencia has been charged with first-degree murder. Authorities have confirmed that Chavez and the suspect knew each other, but details about a possible motive have not been released.

How to Help

The family is encouraging the Durham community to support their fundraiser and continue sharing Chavez’s story. Those who wish to donate can do so via [GoFundMe link] or by attending the food truck benefit event.
