DURHAM, NC – Hundreds of participants laced up their running shoes—and little else—on Saturday afternoon for Durham’s annual Cupid’s Undie Run, a lighthearted yet impactful event aimed at raising funds and awareness for neurofibromatosis (NF), a genetic disorder that causes painful tumor growth.
The event, known for its festive, Valentine’s-themed attire, saw runners sporting everything from heart-shaped tutus and Cupid wings to bold, underwear-only ensembles. The goal? To embrace the uncomfortable and support those living with NF.
Running for a Cure
Cupid’s Undie Run is part of a national movement to fund research for The Children’s Tumor Foundation, which focuses on improving treatments and ultimately finding a cure for neurofibromatosis.
“It’s a group with a purpose,” said event organizer Perrie Wood. “Every dollar we raise helps us get closer to finding a solution for NF.”
This year’s Durham event raised $24,000 toward its $30,000 goal, with funds going toward clinical trials, improved treatments, and research advancements.
A Party with a Purpose
The run kicked off with a lively pre-party at Motorco Music Hall on Rigsbee Avenue, where participants enjoyed music, drinks, and dancing before hitting the pavement for the one-mile run.
“Cupid’s Undie Run is all about letting loose, having fun, and supporting an incredible cause,” said one returning participant. “You start with a party, run a mile, and then celebrate at an epic post-race dance party.”
A Nationwide Effort
Durham’s event is one of many Cupid’s Undie Runs held across the country, all benefiting The Children’s Tumor Foundation. Over the years, the foundation has funded groundbreaking NF research, helping lead to new treatment options for those affected.
