DURHAM, NC – A gas leak in Durham on Monday afternoon led to temporary evacuations and road closures as emergency crews worked to secure the area.
According to the Durham Fire Department (DFD), emergency personnel responded to reports of an active gas leak at approximately 4:20 p.m. near Liberty Street and Alston Avenue.
Response and Evacuations
As a precaution, firefighters evacuated approximately 40 students and teachers from a nearby daycare, relocating them to a safer location until the leak was contained.
Enbridge Gas crews arrived on the scene and successfully sealed the leak by 5:00 p.m., according to an official statement from both the Durham Fire Department and Enbridge Gas.
Cause and Road Closures
A spokesperson for Enbridge Gas confirmed that the leak was caused by third-party workers operating in the area. While repairs were underway, Liberty Street remained closed between Alston Avenue and Hyde Park Avenue to ensure safety.
